A Perfect Day at the Punta Gorda Wine & Jazz Festival (Photos) (2/25/2015) - Saturday, February 21, was the headline event of 10th annual Punta Gorda Wine & Jazz Festival. The Wine & Jazz Festival has in the last few years attracted more and more national attention, and this year’s event saw people traveling in from other parts of the country to attend. It was a perfect day at Laishley Park in downtown Punta Gorda, with temperatures in the mid 70s, plenty of sun, and warm breezes coming off the Charlotte Harbor. Three of the country’s top jazz musicians, Mindi Abair, Dave Koz, and Nick Colionne, performed at the event. Mindi Abair is a favorite of festival regulars, having been the star attraction at the festival’s inaugural event ten years ago. Abair always excites the crowd with her distinctive style, blending smooth-jazz finesse with blues, funk, and R&B influences. Wearing one of his distinctive bright suits, veteran guitarist and singer Nick Colionne rocked on guitar and looked like he was having as much fun as anyone in the audience. Star saxophonist Dave Koz also played an incredible set, demonstrating why he is one of the most well-regarded saxophonists in the country. The highlight of the festival came when the three artists jammed together and invited the fans...READ THE FULL ARTICLE...

Kiplinger looked across the country to find areas that were not only affordable but also safe, livable, and economically stable. Because the study focused on retirees, it placed particular emphasis on affordable health care and housing. Kiplinger said of Punta Gorda, “Of the great many retirement hot spots in Florida, Punta Gorda tops our list.” “[R]etirees have plenty to keep them busy. The city offers 18 miles of bike paths and pedestrian trails—including the scenic Harborwalk along Charlotte Harbor—that connect the various neighborhoods and parks. You can also enjoy boating and other water activities, as well as the charms of Fishermen’s Village, a semi-open-air mall that’s home to a marina, shops, seafood restaurants and free concerts.” This is just the latest national honor for Punta Gorda, a city that has been called one of the best places in the country to live by numerous national publications. A historic town on the banks of the Charlotte Harbor, Punta Gorda was Southwest Florida’s own secret getaway until in 1996 Money Magazine ranked Charlotte County the 2nd best place to live in America and named Punta Gorda the best small town in America. Since then, numerous national publications have called Punta Gorda one of the most desirable places in the country to live. Despite this attention, however, Punta Gorda has remained a small, peaceful, and pleasant resort town. What truly sets Punta Gorda apart is that it offers in one place some of the best fishing, boating, and golfing in the country. At the heart of it all is Charlotte Harbor: a 270-square mile body of water with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. Charlotte Harbor stands today as one of the last unspoiled natural areas on the west coast of Florida, and it was recognized as one of the top ten places in the country to sail by Sail magazine.
